Ear Wax Irrigation

Safe and effective ear wax removal performed by experienced audiologists using gentle irrigation techniques.

At Simply Hear we are experienced audiologists committed to providing a professional and efficient irrigation ear wax removal service.

Ear wax irrigation is a safe, straightforward and effective method of removing ear wax using a gentle stream of warm water. The procedure usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes and is carried out by a qualified audiologist in a professional healthcare setting. Many patients notice clearer hearing and improved comfort immediately after treatment.

What to expect in your appointment

Your ear wax irrigation appointment in three steps

Step 1 - Consultation and examination

Your appointment begins with a short consultation where we take a brief medical history and ask about any ear-related symptoms you have been experiencing. We will then examine your ears to assess the level of wax build-up and check for any signs of infection or other issues. Before proceeding, we will talk you through the procedure and ask you to complete a consent form.

Step 2 - Irrigation procedure

The audiologist will use a controlled flow of warm water to gently flush wax from the ear canal. The procedure is carefully managed to ensure safety and effective removal.

Step 3 - Aftercare and advice

Once the procedure is complete, a final check will be carried out to ensure the ears are clear. If any follow-up care is recommended, personalised advice will be provided. Most individuals notice an immediate improvement in hearing and overall comfort.

Ear irrigation is a method of removing excess earwax by gently flushing the ear canal with warm water. The water softens and washes away the wax, helping to relieve symptoms such as blocked ears, reduced hearing and discomfort.

In many areas of the UK, ear irrigation is no longer routinely available on the NHS. Access depends on your local GP practice or NHS service, and many have stopped offering it in favour of self care advice or referral to specialist services. If you are unable to access treatment through the NHS, Simply Hear offers professional earwax removal appointments with no GP referral required.

Ear irrigation is generally safe when carried out by a trained healthcare professional. However, it is not suitable for everyone. For example, it should not be performed on people with a perforated eardrum, an active ear infection, or certain ear conditions. At Simply Hear, we assess your ears and are able to recommend the most appropriate method of ear wax removal to ensure your treatment is both safe and effective.

At Simply Hear, ear irrigation costs £75. This includes a full ear examination to assess whether treatment is appropriate, followed by professional wax removal if suitable. We always ensure the safest and most effective method is used for your individual needs.

In many cases, using olive oil drops for a few days before ear irrigation can help soften earwax and make removal easier. However, it is not always essential, and suitability depends on the type and amount of wax present. If you are unsure, it is generally safe to use olive oil drops for two to four days before your appointment unless you have been advised otherwise.
